DILLON – Ask hikers on the Appalachian Trail why they have undertaken the 2,142.8 mile hike from Georgia to Maine and most will reply: “It just felt right.” To quote Hunter Irvine’s book, “One Pair of Boots,” about making the arduous journey: “The dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail had bloomed into something beyond a mere goal, and I was determined to complete every mile.”The book reads like a travel journal with conversational flair.

While he mentions the details involved in preparation for the hike and the art of packing, Hunter concentrates more on the people he meets along the way.Everyone he meets has a different story with different things to say. The amount of kindness displayed toward Hunter by complete strangers is striking. Hunter doesn’t flower his language with $10 words. He keeps his prose simple, which at times grows tedious because of the redundancy of a few phrases, but overall the book reads easily and quickly.

Hunter even manages to throw some wry wit and humor into his account – some of the more entertaining parts come from quoting people he meets. Those who have hiked any section of the trail will appreciate the references to stops along the way and the description of hiking uphill when compared to hiking downhill. However, those who have never backpacked will not understand why water can be the greatest thing in the world, or how Mountain Dew is the nectar of the gods or how a person can fantasize about the taste of chicken.

While not a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, “One Pair of Boots” provides an easy, relaxing read that makes you appreciate both nature and humanity. Austin Diaz can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 251, or at adiaz@summitdaily.com.
