Rescuers search for hiker on Mount of the Holy Cross

More than 100 rescuers are looking for a 35-year-old Front Range woman whol disappeared Saturday afternoon near the summit of Mount of the Holy Cross, authorities say.

Michelle Vanek, of Lakewood, was hiking with a friend when she decided to rest just below the summit of the 14,005-foot peak. Vanek’s friend couldn’t find her after desecending from the summit, Eagle County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Andree said.

After calling for help, the friend continued to search the area where Vanek disappeared on Eagle County’s only 14,000-foot peak.

Searchers, some who have come from as far away as Utah, have brought four dog teams and five helicopters to help look for Vanek.
