Residents oppose plan for air tours

GATEWAY ” Residents worried about noise are opposing a plan for helicopter and single-engine airplane tours of western Colorado and eastern Utah.

John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel and owner of Gateway Canyons Resort, about 50 miles south of Grand Junction, plans to use a private runway for the commercial tour flights. The plan is expected to go before the Mesa County Mesa County Planning Commission on March 12, and the County Commission March 24.

The area features the Grand Mesa, and stunning canyons, including the Colorado Monument, Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. Gateway residents Don and Susan Bowes have submitted a letter opposing the plan.

John Williams, general counsel for the resort, said the noise will be less than a highway.
