Rhonda Pederson: Respecting our forests

Rhonda Pederson

Jeff Westcott of the Firecracker 50 sounded pretty blase about violating the conditions of his USFS permit by mechanically removing snow from a trail on US Forest Service land. I hope this attitude was only what came through from the paper’s interview. His decision “to make the call” without obtaining prior permission to use mechanical snow removal means in violation of his permit is an attitude that, unfortunately, many individuals seem to have. They think National Forests are theirs to do with as they please. Our National Forests belong to everyone and misuse by any individual affects land that doesn’t belong just to them.
