Rick Hague: Breck’s weird intermediate run issue

One issue that I have not seen addressed in the discussion concerning the Breckenridge Ski Resort’s (BSR) request to expand onto Peak 6 is the matter of intermediate terrain. In addition to BRS’s heartfelt concern about “enhancing” the skier’s experience and providing an “epic” ski vacation, BSR is suddenly concerned about its lack of intermediate skiing terrain.

Why, then, for the 2010-2011 season, did BSR change the designation of many intermediate (blue and blue-black) runs to black? I, too, share their concern that, since most skiers are intermediate, it makes sense to have lots and lots of intermediate runs. Why then eliminate such designations and then turn around, with a great wringing of hands, to claim that Peak 6 is vitally needed to provide such runs? Many of us found such runs as Peak 10’s Centennial, Crystal and Double Jack and Peak 9’s Volunteer (among others) to be perfectly good intermediate skiing. Now they’re all of the sudden expert (black diamond) runs after 20-25 years or so. Has the mountain gotten steeper? Maybe they should check out Silverthorne or Bonanza to make sure things haven’t changed there.

Could it be that there is a connection between eliminating intermediate runs and needing new ones on Peak 6? I’m certainly not cynical enough to believe that this situation is any more than a coincidence.
