Tom Flanigan has never had any doubt about what he wanted to be when he grew up. He’s been an artist all of his life, and has had plenty of fun throughout his life learning techniques from a variety of artists. He started his faux finishing business in Florida in 1990 and then moved to Colorado in 1997, settling in Summit County two years later.Since then, he’s been involved with the Summit County Arts Council and the Summit County Builders Association (where he painted for properties in the Parade of Homes). He teaches art privately and also paints landscapes, portraits and wildlife in oils, water colors and acrylics.Dreams

I’d like to have my own gallery and help young artists get started. Why do art?Because that is what God gave me. I do it because it’s creative, it’s relaxing and it stimulates my mind. I love color. What do you convey through art?Life in all its many facets. I try to express the way I feel.

ChallengeDealing with the public – trying to please them and do what they want. They tell me what they want, and I have to put it on the wall. When I first started, I had to do a lot of art for free.Accomplishment

Passing art on to my children. I’ve given them the opportunity to do the same thing I do by teaching them different techniques and allowing them to express themselves through art, music, theater and gymnastics. My kids are 14, 18 and 26.Staying freshI continually stay involved in projects, and I work with artists. When you’re not doing art?I spend time with my daughters and dog and snowboard. I also volunteer at the Red Door, participate in ministry, travel, stay active in most sports and do plenty of outdoor activities.
