Kate Kiesler draws for children. She illustrates children’s books, paints and makes prints. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in illustration, and she teaches at Colorado Mountain College’s in the art department. She has illustrated more than 20 books for children and is a partner at Hands On Art in Frisco, where she shows her paintings and prints.DreamsMaking a living at art has always been a dream of mine. I would like to continue illustrating books as well as painting on my own.

Why do you do it?I think I am most content when I am immersed in something creative, when I am completely absorbed by an idea and its execution. In many ways it is a selfish act, but if I can touch someone else with what I do my work has meaning. What do you convey through art?

In illustration, I am required to tell a story with my pictures. In painting, I am also telling a story, but it may be one of light or shape or place. It varies from painting to painting.AccomplishmentI am proud that I can center my working life around something that I love to do. I’m grateful that I have had a steady career in the publishing business and that I am able to also continue my fine art.

Staying freshTeaching helps keep me motivated. My students are inspiring and see things in a different way than I do. When you’re not doing art?I spend most of my free time in the woods hiking and skiing. I also read a lot.
