Sometimes music isn’t enough to get you through, but getting in tune can change your opportunities. Lori Schneider earned her bachelor of music degree from Indiana University and trained with the Randy Potter School of Piano Technology. But she wasn’t sure how to make a living off her music in Summit County until she learned a new skill – piano tuning. She founded Schneider Piano Service in Silverthorne in 2004. DreamsI am currently working on building my piano tuning and lesson business. I hope to someday own my own music and/or piano store.

Playing, teaching and tuning all bring a sense of achievement when finished. There is great satisfaction and enjoyment in being able to finish a difficult piece of music.

My biggest challenge has been figuring out how to use my music and my degree while living in Summit County. After having difficulties getting my own piano tuned, I felt that learning an additional skill could open up opportunities for me in this region. Luckily, tuning has done just that.

I am very proud that I was able to earn my degree in music. It was a very long and difficult process. I am also proud of my tuning business and that I have been able to build it to the point it is at now. When you’re not doing art?I participate on the Arts For the Summit Committee and have constructed its website and concierge book. I also work with College Funding of the Rockies, a nonprofit in Frisco that assists high schools students and their parents in figuring out how to choose a school and pay for college.
