Rita Martin: Misleading cartoon about gun violence

Wow, what a misleading political cartoon printed in the SDN Oct. 8. Whoever made that one up failed to check the facts.

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws on the books in the United States. Crimes go up when the criminals know that their victims will be unarmed.

The Supreme Court has already upheld the Second Amendment. Are they to be blamed as well for the death and carnage that a gun can do in the wrong hands? The NRA are not a bunch irresponsible gun advocates. They understand and teach that with owning a gun comes responsibility, not the least of which is how to safely handle any gun a person has in their hands.

Restrictive gun laws don’t work because criminals by their very definition do not obey the law. If they did, murder would not happen. Rape would not happen and any other form of violence would not happen.

Most gun owners respect the law and what a gun can do and they learn how to safely handle a gun.

Editor’s note: The cartoon was created by syndicated cartoonist Chris Britt, presumably in response to the fact that, according to Bloomberg News, at least 47 school-age children in Chicago have been killed in homicides – mostly involving guns – since Barack Obama became president.
