Ritter selects nominees to head human services, public safety

DENVER Gov.-elect Bill Ritter on Wednesday added two more people to his growing list of Cabinet nominations, selecting potential leaders for the Human Services and Public Safety departments.Ritter, who is scheduled to be sworn in next week, said he will nominate Broomfield Health and Human Services Director Karen Legault Beye to head the state Human Services department, and Jefferson County District Judge Peter Weir to head the Public Safety department. Both nominations require Senate confirmation.Ritter said Beye has strong ties with county officials across the state, something that would help in running an agency that oversees all county departments of social and human services, the state’s public mental health system, services for people with developmental disabilities, the youth corrections system and state and veterans’ nursing homes.Beye served as executive director of the former state Department of Social Services after she was appointed to that post by then-Gov. Roy Romer in 1993.Weir, a former prosecutor in El Paso and Jefferson counties, is a former head of the Colorado District Attorneys Council who was appointed judge by Gov. Bill Owens in 2004.He would head an agency that oversees the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Division of Criminal Justice, Division of Fire Safety and the Office of Preparedness, Security and Fire Safety.
