Roan protesters to march in Glenwood

Post Independent Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” The Campaign to Save Roan Plateau says people will march on the Bureau of Land Management offices Wednesday to deliver thousands of protest letters.

The group said in a news release that citizens, elected officials and representatives from hunting, angling and conservation groups will gather in Gregory Park in West Glenwood Springs to “protest the (BLM’s) unwillingness to protect the Roan Plateau’s many traditional and popular uses. The Roan’s public lands provide a sustainable economic base for local communities. The BLM intends to sacrifice these values as part of a relentless push to consign public lands across the west to a future of industrial drilling.”

The rally will include signs, speakers and a march to the BLM’s offices to deliver the letters of protest. Protests must be received by the BLM before 4 p.m. Wednesday to be considered.

The news release says an overwhelming majority of citizens, communities, sportsmen, and recreation and conservation groups have sought to protect the Roan Plateau from oil and gas drilling since the BLM began its planning process there.

“With plans to lease every acre of public land on the Roan Plateau for gas development next month, at the Aug. 14 oil and gas lease sale, citizens are rallying in Glenwood to make their final pitch to BLM that these lands get the protection the public has favored,” the news release explained.

The protest begins at 11 a.m. and is expected to last until about 1 p.m. To get to Gregory Park, go west on Highway 6 past the Glenwood Springs Mall and turn right on Storm King Road. Go north to Center Drive, then turn left to Gregory Park.
