Rob Theobald: More info on Blue River sewer issues

Blue River

I would like to offer additional information regarding the Blue River sewer annexation. Inclusion into the Breckenridge Sanitation District merely allows the district to plan for future needs. It does not mandate a connection or any fees. No construction will take place until property owners request to be connected, and no fees will be charged until the connection to the sewer is made. However, once the sewer is constructed, residents replacing failed septic systems or constructing new homes may be required to connect to the sewer, but in many instances this will be a savings over septic repair or construction. Additionally in cases of hardship due to septic failure, the Sanitation District has offered to provide financing. Essentially what is being offered is an insurance policy against septic failure that does not cost anything unless you need it.

If Blue River property owners wish to opt out of inclusion in the District they can do so by sending written notice to the Breckenridge Sanitation District by Oct. 9. Opting out of the District has the downsides mentioned in the article and also means you cannot vote in the election for inclusion.

Per state statue, the election for inclusion will be open to voters registered in Blue River for at least one month prior to the election and to Blue River property owners that are registered voters in the state of Colorado. Any homeowner that does not fall into one of those two categories can easily change their registration to vote in Blue River even after the November general election, as this vote is not until February.

Additionally, there will be a public hearing on the issue at the Oct. 9 meeting of the Sanitation District Board giving anybody a chance to comment on the issues and to learn more.
