Robert Hillard Bennett passed away at the age of 84

Robert Hillard Bennett, 84, father of former Summit Daily News publisher Mike Bennett, passed away Saturday at the Bath Veteran’s Hospital in Bath, NY.Born in Philadelphia, PA, he resided in Chesterfield for the past 45 years. Bennett served in the Merchant Marines and then entered into the U.S. Army during World War II and served with the 104th Infantry Yankee Division. He received the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Purple Heart and The Bronze Star Medal. War stories about “Bob” can be found in the book titled; Old Man from the Repple Depple by Thomas Oblinger.After the war he worked as an advertising consultant for the Trenton Times and The Register News. He was a scout leader for Chesterfield’s Troop 55 and received the Order of the Arrow. He enjoyed music and the outdoors, but his greatest love was spending time with his family.He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Bennett; his four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Bonnie Bennett, Alan and Rosemary Bennett, Hugh and Linda Bennett and Gregg Bennett; his daughter, Cindy Bennett; his grandchildren, Sara, Sabrina, Chris, Melissa, Tomas, Miriam, and Madeleine; and his great-grandson, Caleb. A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery located in Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bob’s name to National Center for PTSD VA Medical Center, 215 N.
