SILVERTHORNE ” A 69-year-old Carbondale man died late Tuesday afternoon following a single-vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 70 near the Silverthorne exit, officials said.

Clyde Ebbs passed away while being transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center about 3:45 p.m., according to a press release by Summit County Office of the Coroner. The man’s wife was also transported to the hospital.

The two were traveling eastbound when the accident occurred, said Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper Ron Watkins.

As a mix of rain and snow poured down throughout the late afternoon, traffic moved slowly past the accident by mile marker 206. Two eastbound lanes were closed and one westbound as CSP investigated.

The red 1999 Ford Explorer laid on its roof in the median, with contents spilled onto the grass.

Both CSP and Silverthorne Police Department responded to the scene.

Ebbs and his wife were wearing seatbelts and it is unknown whether the crash was due to medical causes, according to the coroner’s office. An autopsy has been ordered.

No further information was available Tuesday evening.

This was the first fatal car accident of the year. Last year, five people died as a result of car accidents on Summit County roads, according to statistics from Coroner Joanne Richardson.
