Roman Kowalewicz: Hidden Gems tramples our rights

As a long-time opponent to The Hidden Gems agenda, I gladly see last week’s Summit Daily letters in opposition to this initiative. Ms. Fagan and Mr. Bright from different points of view questioned the plan. We clearly have to pinpoint who the Hidden Gems Proposal is targeting? It is not targeting oil or gas drillers since on the proposed terrain, there are no known reserves. It is not targeting loggers, since all the proposed land lies in national forests. For the same reason, it is not targeting developers, because nobody can build within the national forest boundaries. The only group left is a small group of people that use mechanized equipment like jeeps, ATV’s, bicycles and motorcycles, that enjoy access to remote locations inaccessible for many without help of fuel or muscle-propelled engines.

I feel that there is some assault on our civil liberties recently, what some of my friends call “environmental fascists that want to close us in a forest concentration camp.” The Hidden Gems Initiative is another group working behind closed doors representing a few and trying to implement new rules on our national forest land. They are trying to close recreational mechanized access to areas of Summit County to us and our future generations, taking our constitutional liberties away from us. I don’t know how we may explain this coup to our children and grandchildren. We all love our Summit County mountains and we hope that they will remain as they are forever without unnecessary human intervention. We citizens of Summit County and further residents of all Colorado, have no rights to dictate new rules on national forests that belong to all Americans.
