The Breckenridge Film Festival’s exciting lineup of innovative films will include an Edgy RomCom session on Saturday, Sept. 19, perfect for date nights. Two of the included short films are “Heavenly Peace” and “Speed Dating,” and I’ll review them here, but just let your imagination try to figure out what some of the other films are about from their titles: “Her First Black Guy,” “Technical Difficulties of Intimacy,” “The Trouble Downstairs and Route Canal.”

In the traditionally animated short, “Heavenly Peace,” an estranged couple gets an unexpected visit from an infant angel just in time for Christmas. The overly ambitious angel relays messages back and forth between the quarreling homosexual men while attempting to distort the truth just enough to get them back together. The result is both funny and poignant and resonates with all types of couples.

In “Speed Dating,” sweet and plain Ava is desperate to find the man of her dreams. She tries speed dating in a last-ditch effort, but the absurd and unforgettably weird cast of characters she encounters makes her wonder if being single is not so bad after all. “Speed Dating” uses digitally-manipulated live actors as stop motion puppets to tell a sweet, funny story that harkens back to old comedies. It relies on sound and physicality to tell the story rather than dialogue. With excellent comedic timing and gorgeous visuals, “Speed Dating” beautifully displays some of animation’s best qualities.

Join the Breckenridge Film Festival on Sept. 17-20 to celebrate 35 years! Featuring 50+ films, chances to meet filmmakers, panel discussions, parties, mingling and more. Learn more at Email for information on supporting the Breckenridge Film Festival.
