Rotary Club recruiting foreign exchange students

Daily News staff report

The Summit County Rotary Club is seeking high school students interested in long- or short-term foreign exchanges.

Preliminary applications for the long-term program are due by Oct. 31. Students age 16 to 18 1/2 are eligible to apply for the yearlong exchange, which consists of an academic year in one of 20 host countries, during which the student lives with one to three families and attends school.

The short-term program is a summer exchange in which students live abroad for one month and bring their host siblings back to their homes for one month.

Students age 14-18 are eligible for this summer exchange. The deadline for submitting applications for the summer exchange is March 31.

To qualify, applicants should be above-average students who demonstrate leadership in their community.

Candidates should also possess qualities which will enable them to become excellent cultural ambassadors, such as flexibility and a willingness to try new things.

All applicants must complete a written application and will be interviewed for sponsorship by the Summit Rotary Club.

The costs of the programs vary based on the country visited, as plane fares, exchange rates and other costs vary.

Typically, the student and his or her parents are responsible for round-trip airfare to the host country, health and accident insurance, travel documents such as passports and visas, clothing and spending money and an emergency fund for use during the year. Scholarships are available for qualifying students.

Students and parents can learn more about these foreign exchange opportunities by visiting http://www.rye5450.org or calling Eric Fisher at (970) 668-1949.
