Rotary condo raffle: A small project with a global reach

Even as good news greets Summit County with increased sales tax, and an uptick in lodging, there are still many people who are just barely making ends meet. It is sometimes hard to believe that amid the splendor and luxury of Summit County, there are families with children who scarcely have enough to feed them even one full meal each day. These people are hard workers, who are under-employed and just scraping by.

The Rotary Club of Summit County has reached out to hundreds of people trying to stay afloat, with a free weekly community dinner. Since 2009 when the doors opened at the Elk Lodge in Silverthorne for the first community dinner, more than 34,000 meals have been served to people in need. No questions asked, no one is turned away at the door. When school is out of session, backpacks full of food are supplied to the children who may otherwise go hungry during the breaks. The most beautiful part is that many folks need a boost during hard times, and then come back to the dinner as a volunteer or donor once they are back on their feet.

Because Summit County receives visitors from across the globe, the Rotary Club has found a way to reach out to people from everywhere. As part of the fundraising effort for this special project, and others supported by Rotary, the club launched http://www.windreamcondo.com to raffle off cash or a million dollar luxury condo in Breckenridge with ticket prices as low as $30. In the true spirit of a generous community, people from all over the world are donating to the cause and helping this one-of-a-kind community provide for those in need.
