Rough Riders of the Rockies horse around at 4-H gymkhana

Special to the Daily/Cindy Birchler

On June 9, the Rough Riders of the Rockies participated in a Summit County 4-H gymkhana. Riders age from 8 years old through adults compete in four speed events within their age category: Barrel racing, flags, pole bending and keyhole. Points accumulate for each rider throughout the series of four races, with all participants recognized for their fearless efforts at the last race. The final three gymkhanas are being held at the Silverthorne Arena on July 13, Aug. 10 and Aug. 31. New riders are always welcome and 4-H members ride for free, otherwise each event costs $5. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the races start at 10 a.m. Contact Cindy Birchler at (970) 376-2933 for more information.
