MORNING UPDATE: I-70 open, but Loveland Pass remains closed
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct a reference to the location of the closure. To check the status of the road closure, visit CoTrip.org.
6:15 a.m., Wednesday: Interstate 70 eastbound is open, however, Loveland Pass is still closed. U.S. Highway 40 was briefly closed in both directions south of Winter Park due to a crash, according to CoTrip.org.
11:40 p.m.: Interstate 70 is still closed eastbound due to multiple stalled vehicles.
8:40 p.m.: A semitractor-trailer with its hazard lights blinking is causing a major traffic jam on Interstate 70 eastbound just west of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial tunnels, according to a live traffic camera on CoTrip.org.
S-shaped tire tracks through the snow that lead to the trailer show it likely lost traction on its way toward the Continental Divide, according to a traffic camera screenshot. CoTrip.org, a Colorado Department of Transportation application that gives traffic alerts, is reporting that a “stalled vehicle” is causing lane closures, corroborating what is shown on the traffic camera.

Eastbound Interstate 70 is closed due to “safety concerns,” according to CoTrip.org.
U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass remains closed for “safety concerns” as a storm that brought “blizzard conditions” to Summit County continues to cause traffic issues in the region.
The stalled semi tonight comes after Colorado State Patrol said it is planning to increase enforcement of tire chain law and traction law violations, which results in fines, though the Vail mayor has proclaimed that the financial penalties are not severe enough.
The issues on Interstate 70 during winter are prompting elected officials to pursue bills aimed at trying to improve the major thoroughfare, which results in an economic loss estimated at $1.6 million every hour it is closed, according to recent reports from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Semis and commercial vehicles must carry tire chains, according to Colorado state law. Passenger vehicles must comply with traction laws, which are in effect and require all-wheel drive plus all-season tires or proper traction devices, such as snow tires or chains, for two-wheel drive vehicles.
