Safeway, ConAgra recall ground beef

by STAFF

SUMMIT COUNTY – Safeway and ConAgra Beef Co. officials are recalling ground beef that might contain a variety of E. coli, a bacteria that can make people violently ill.

According to Jeff Stroh of the Denver Division of Safeway, people should check their freezers for ground beef that might have been purchased between June 6 and 18. Safeway stores in Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota might have received packages of the contaminated meat.

The recall is being done as a precautionary measure, and no illnesses have been reported yet, said Tim Hakin, president of the grocery chain’s Denver Division.

“It’s unlikely any of this product remains in our customers’ refrigerators, but we’re asking that they check their freezers,” Hakin said. “We want to make it clear that this does not apply to any of the ground beef available in our stores now.”

The meats in question were packaged on white foam trays and labeled “80% Lean Ground Beef 20% Fat,” or on yellow foam trays labeled “80% LEAN GR BF 20% FAT Valu Pk.” Labels on the possibly contaminated meat bear a “Sell by” date of June 7 to 18.

Safeway will provide a refund to those who return the product or have proof they bought it at that store.

The bacteria, known among scientists as E.coli0157: H7, is killed in the cooking process. To ensure meat has been adequately prepared, food preparers should cook ground beef to 160 degrees in the center.
