Salsa and Latin jazz heat up Lake Dillon Amphitheatre

DILLON – If you haven’t joined the dance craze at the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre yet, it’s time.

Conjunto Colores ushers in the hot rhythms of the Caribbean, Cuba and Puerto Rico with a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre.

“It’s the feeling and the dancing (that excites people),” bandleader Francisco Mejias said. “You’ve just got to get up and move. It’s high-energy and very compulsive, a type of music that has a Caribbean-type influence. If you’re sitting down, you’ll definitely be forced to move eventually sometime during our show.”

Conjunto Colores has been the mainstay of Denver’s Latin sound throughout the past 20 years. The 11-piece band captivates audiences with its salsa rhythms and Latin jazz.

“We do a rhythm called “claves,’ which is basically getting the audience into the pulse of the music,” Mejias said.

The band plays original music derived from composers and arrangers in New York City and San Francisco. Raised in New York, Mejias has been influenced by salsa bands in his native city, as well as musicians in Puerto Rico, where he spent a number of years soaking up the sounds.

The band has released three CDs and has opened for musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Diane Reeves.
