Salut Summit County!

Bienvenue from beautiful Bretagne, where the grass is green, the people are friendly, and the seafood is fresh. I am officially installed in with my new French family who, I am happy to say, loves the outdoors, loves good food, and especially, loves good wine. After four days of orientation (being an official tourist in Paris), a group of 30 American students and I set off on a bus with Rennes as our final destination. No longer than four hours later, we arrived at what was soon to be our university campus, where our host families awaited us. All went according to schedule: the first dinner with the family – somewhat of an awkward experience, but it is our experiences that make us stronger, right?I have spent the past two weeks at a language school where French grammar rules have become part of the norm, and although being a somewhat excruciating period of time, I believe I have finally learned some useful rules. That is not to say that my everyday French is up to par … that, my friends, will take several hours of long dinner conversations with my host family. I am still eager to learn, though.I will leave you now with an image of a coast – not just any coast, however. Imagine, and I know you can, waves beating against the white sand; the water is nearly black and is laced with a thin, silk lining. The rocks, sharp and jagged, cut the water in two. The ocean is relentless: it rushes to fill the endless caverns that surround the land’s edge.Voilà, un petit moment of bliss! A bien tot mes amis!Natalie Ward is a part-time resident of Summit County who will be writing monthly columns about her experiences studying abroad in Europe. She can be contacted at
