Sandy Mortensen: Loss of winter rec a bad idea

Thank goodness for two Summit County residents making great comments about the loss of the outdoor program in the schools. Brewer and Cunningham have said it well in several of their comments on removing this program. Sounds to me like cramming before a test is supposed to make a difference. It never made a difference for me in school or for any of my children. There seems to be evidence for having a break in the day or the week for physical activity actually improves the ability for concentration/focus.

One of my sons made this comment: “Is this just more collateral damage from No Child Left Mediocre?” I raised four children in Summit county starting in 1977 when they had half a day a week for about six weeks for winter related activity.
