Saturn Classic was a great event

Lawrence Baca, Breckenridge

Although this letter might be a couple of days late, it’s never too late to respond to absurdity.

First, congratulations to the Breckenridge Resort Chamber and the town for hosting such a great event as the Saturn Cycling Classic. I volunteered in the kids’ activities area, and I left four hours later thoroughly exhausted from the hundreds of folks who participated in this great display of animation. In fact, the only “complaint” I heard was from one visiting parent who was disappointed the town wasn’t hosting a similar event on the following day.

Second, disgruntled businesspersons are simply displaying shortsightedness and selfishness. The BRC, the town, and all merchants should be proud they were able to host a nationally publicized event (resort towns generally covet coverage on “The Today Show” and ESPN2.)

Third, it’s a little disappointing, though not surprising, that the Summit Daily News provided an unreasonable amount of space to one displeased merchant and failed to provide a fair representation to those in the overwhelming majority who found the event so successful.

My wife, our friends and I stayed long after our volunteering had ended, and we spent plenty of money with some of the local merchants. This isn’t something we normally do on a summer afternoon. Granted, we didn’t purchase ceramic trinkets and carved wooden bears, and I concede that the very large crowd last Saturday eschewed the same for food and beverage.

But the event brought a great amount of publicity and animation to our corner of Colorado. And quite frankly, I’m proud of the BRC and my community – even if, for one day, we weren’t the ceramic trinket capital of the nation.
