‘Scarred’ area serves as park

Sandy Van Nest
Frisco

I would like to respond to Kent Higgins’ letter concerning the area that is being used as a bike park. I have a completely different reaction as I find to this area a wonderful addition to the neighborhood where I live. I walk there with my friends and our dogs twice a day almost every day. This is space that Mr. Higgins describes as “tucked away,” and he is right. If the scars started with the hydro-mining in the 1920, all the users have done is make something useful and wonderful from that damage.

I see people from approximately 10 to young adults riding together, the older riders teaching the younger new techniques. I hear talking and laughing and have never witnessed much conflict. The kids riding to this area are careful of pedestrians and their pets.

I do not see trash and I have been impressed by how clean the area is kept. I did see a lot of beer cans at graduation time, but I doubt the users of this area, who care so much about it, were the ones partying. On every trail I have walked in Summit County, I have seen things hanging from trees: hats, gloves, dog leashes in the hopes that the owner will see and retrieve them.

When my son was young and loved to ride bikes, I would have given anything to have an area like this to keep him busy, happy and off the streets. I love the woods and agree that conservation is extremely important to our lifestyle and the reason we love Summit County, but this is a very small space that really could be used for little else. I hope the young people who have made so much effort will be praised, not deprived of this wonderful playground.
