Schieffer will fill in as anchor after Rather

NEW YORK – Veteran “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer will temporarily replace Dan Rather as “CBS Evening News” anchorman when Rather steps down next month, the network said on Wednesday.Schieffer will serve “for a short transition period” until the broadcast gets a new format, CBS News President Andrew Heyward said.CBS chief Leslie Moonves said last month that he was probably going to install a multi-anchor format for the “CBS Evening News,” which has been a distant third in the ratings behind NBC and ABC.The Schieffer announcement confirms that new format won’t be ready in time for Rather’s exit March 9 – the 24th anniversary of when he took over from Walter Cronkite.”I’m very honored that they asked me, but I’m not replacing Dan Rather,” Schieffer said. “This is a temporary assignment and I’m doing it to be helpful until they come up with what comes next.”Schieffer will continue with “Face the Nation” during this period. He will anchor the evening news from CBS’ New York studio.
