School cancels Planned Parenthood presentations

COLORADO SPRINGS ” Mitchell High School has canceled Planned Parenthood’s presentations to health classes following protests over similar presentations at other schools.

Mitchell Principal Jerry Anderson said protesters spent time outside Palmer High School with graphic pictures of aborted fetuses during Planned Parenthood presentations there.

Colorado Springs District 11 board member Eric Christen, who had sought to have Planned Parenthood barred, welcomed the cancellation at Mitchell.

Kate Horle, vice president for public relations at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said she understood the school’s decision this week and the responsibility to keep students and staff, but was disappointed. The nonprofit group has been in district schools for 30 years, she said.

District 11 spokeswoman Elaine Naleski said Planned Parenthood is still welcome in district schools and administrators can still request the presentations.

Planned Parenthood services include offering birth control information, contraceptives, adoption referrals, and abortions or abortion referrals.
