Searchers find snow cave on Pyramid Peak, but not missing climber

Pitkin County authorities said Monday evening that a climber was missing on Pyramid Peak — despite searchers finding a snow cave likely to have been used by the man.

The Sheriff’s Office said it received a call at approximately 8:50 p.m. Sunday concerning an overdue climber.

Pyramid Peak’s summit is at 14,026 feet in the Elk Mountains just south of Aspen.

The missing climbed is Ryan David Montoya, 23, originally from California.

Mountain Rescue Aspen deployed teams in a search effort Monday afternoon.

“In spite of the extreme weather conditions in the area today, the volunteer searchers were able to locate a snow cave possibly used by Mr. Montoya,” a news release said. “Mr. Montoya, however, was not located.”

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and Mountain Rescue Aspen planned to resume the search Tuesday morning.
