Second Creek Cabin Group to rebuild trail

Join the Grand Huts Association (GHA) volunteers in their first step Sept. 11-12 toward building a new cabin in a basin off Berthoud Pass.Volunteers will re-route a section of trail which is damaging a sensitive wetland. Children are encouraged to attend as much of the work will involve moving scarce topsoil and plants from the new trail to rehabilitate the old trail. Bring garden spades and buckets for this work; the Forest Service will bring large tools. The GHA was founded to build a 2,000-square-foot public cabin in the Second Creek basin. The cabin will include quarters for volunteers, rooms for overnight rental and a day-use room which will double as a high-altitude classroom for local and visiting students and day-use hikers and skiers. The Second Creek basin is one of the most beautiful, and highly used, basins on the Front Range. To get to the site, travel down the west side of Berthoud Pass, going past two switchbacks (or two switchbacks up from the west base of the pass) to a horseshoe bend about halfway up or down the pass. Volunteers will display a sign with a multicolored flag. Lunch and drinks will be provided. Call Andy Miller to R.S.V.P. at (970) 726-4099. Work starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, 9 a.m. on Sunday.
