Davis Gidney’s tack kit includes hairspray so she can give her horse, Walker, a stiff mane “horn” before 4H gymkhanas. She also braids his tail lovingly while joking about how his pink accoutrement might offend him.

Gidney was one of 24 competitors during the second gymkhana of the summer on Saturday, which includes barrel racing, pole bending (slalom), a flag race and the keyhole, which requires great control of a horse’s movements.

Gidney took second in the 11 to 13-year-old division.

“We’re really good at barrel racing,” she said of her favorite event.

However, 4H in Summit County offers a variety of activities other than the horse club, Rough Riders of the Rockies. There is also archery, fly fishing, mountain biking and gardening, as well as many others. Blue-sky days like Saturday are perfect for all.

Juli White said she enjoys archery because it get her out of the house.

“Having the arrow fly out of the bow and fly through the air,” said her brother Tristan while the bowstring on his bow still vibrated.
