Second reservoir best bet for Breck

BRECKENRIDGE – Water experts told the Breckenridge Town Council Tuesday afternoon that it would be more feasible to build a second reservoir than to enlarge Goose Pasture Tarn by dredging it.

According to water attorney Glenn Porzak, the town has rights to 1,046 acre-feet of water. An acre-foot is the amount of water it takes to cover an acre of water to a depth of one foot. The town also has committed 842 acre-feet of water to other users, including the Blue River Water District, the town’s golf courses and the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The difference, 204 acre-feet, is enough water to justify building a second reservoir, Porzak said. An engineering firm will now determine if the McCain property, a parcel the town recently acquired, can accommodate the 204 acre-feet of water.
