Senate committee backs grants for clean tech firms
DENVER ” The Senate Local Government and Technology Committee has backed a proposal to help cultivate homegrown clean technology companies.
The panel endorsed the measure Thursday.
It would allow the state to give out grants to support clean tech projects including renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The aim is to help researchers and small startups figure out how to get their ideas to market and prevent them from being lured out of state by investors.
The bill would raise $5 million by more than doubling the state’s tire disposal fee to $3.25 a tire. Tire manufacturers oppose the bill because it would divert the fee to another use.
The Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory, which would get half the money, has promised to work on ways to get rid of the state’s tire stockpile.
