Severe thunderstorms prompt flood warning in Summit County

Severe thunderstorms in Summit County Monday night prompted a flash-flood warning in the area. Lightning strikes and heavy thunder were observed around the county, with at least one building damaged. Witnesses say the steeple at Father Dyer Church in Breckenridge sustained a direct lightning hit, damaging the historic structure.

Trained weather spotters reported nearly 2 inches of rain has fallen in the space of an hour in Breckenridge, according to the NWS.

The Town of Breckenridge reported Airport Road was again closed Monday evening due to flooding. Also, the Breckenridge Golf Course sent out an email saying the course would not open Tuesday due to “flooding conditions we have not seen since the course opened.”

About 19 miles north of Silverthorne, Highway 9 was down to one lane Monday evening following a mud slide, according to the Colorado Dept. of Transportation.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue over the mountains and higher valleys through mid evening. Storms will be more numerous across Larimer, Grand, Jackson and Summit counties. Expect heavy

rain…small hail and gusty winds with the storms. Rainfall rates will be up to an inch of rain in 30 minutes or less with the stronger storms.
