Sheriff cites man for dumping used tires

Jane Stebbins

KEYSTONE – Sheriff’s deputies cited a man for littering from a motor vehicle after county landfill officials said they saw him throwing used tires from a hill near the landfill.

According to Sheriff’s Office reports, an official from the landfill called police to let them know a customer had told him another man was throwing tires over the edge of a hill – a common problem because the landfill charges money to accept tires.

The landfill officials said the man had just left the area after emptying his trailer of tires. A Dillon police officer apprehended the man, later identified as Elias Rubio.

Rubio said he was moving the tarp used to cover his load of tires and the tires fell off his trailer and began rolling down the hill. He told the officer he was retrieving the tires when the police officer found him.
