Sheriff Minor’s personal take

Sheriff John Minor

Summit County Sheriff John Minor is on the front lines of the local effort to integrate local immigrants – both legal and illegal – but he comes at the problem from a truly personal perspective. He himself is an immigrant, who with his mother and father emigrated from England through the proper channels.

It took Minor’s family two-and-a-half years of red tape, travel costs and invasive interrogation before being granted the green cards that enabled them to move to America, and the incredible opportunity that presented. The questioning was almost too much for his folks, though. His mother and father grew up during World War II. His father sat in air raid shelters in London, yet the path to citizenship required that he and his wife be asked questions like if he’d ever been a member of the Nazi Party.”I understand why everyone wants to come here, though,” Minor recounted. “We grew up in a working class neighborhood. The educational opportunities were limited, and the job opportunities were almost non-existent.”

“But here I am, and I made it to be the sheriff,” he said proudly. As to today’s immigration mess, Minor is encouraged that the federal government appears to be addressing border security, and he anticipates new harsh laws aimed at employers who hire illegal immigrants.

As to the people already here illegally, Minor is surprisingly diplomatic about all the folks who broke the law to come to this country, as opposed to taking the legal path as he did.”There seems to be one consistent message today, that (the illegals) are going to go to the back of the line (for citizenship). And you know, I’m OK with that,” he said.- Duffy Hayes
