Sheriff Si Woodruff: Thank you to Summit County Rescue Group

Sheriff Si Woodruff
Rio Blanco County, Meeker

Last weekend our community unfortunately needed the services from the Summit County Rescue Group and their K-9s. One of our community citizens, a 19-year-old snowmobiler, was out with a friend and was caught up in a large avalanche on Sand Peak south of Meeker. His friend tried unsuccessfully to find and dig him out but was forced to leave the scene to seek help.

Some 60 volunteers came to the scene that night but were unfortunately forced to abandon the area due to safety concerns. The following listed members of your Rescue Group team responded to our request for help the next day and were quickly able to locate the missing boy within a short period of time with Recco, one of the Summit Rescue Group dogs. So a personal thank-you to Mark Watson, Preston Burns, Whitney Baker, Hunter Mortensen, Tom Tunner, John Reller, Chris Sutton and the K-9’s Recco, Tally and Cascade and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. An additional thanks to Copper Mountain and Breckenridge Ski Areas, which understand are contributors to the K-9’s Recco and Tally.

Our entire community is grateful for your assistance as avalanches are very rare in our county. I know the family also sends a special thank-you for the genuine concern and thoughtfulness of all the members of your rescue team. Your community truly is blessed to have such professional and dedicated members that you can reach out to in a time of need. Thank you again
