Sheriff’s Office will increase patrol this weekend to keep roads safe

SUMMIT COUNTY – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office will step up patrol this weekend in an attempt to keep the county’s roads safer during an historically increased time of year for DUIs.Sheriff John Minor said beginning this weekend, and for the next 10 days, the department will add a few more deputies throughout the county. Minor said he will likely add extra staff during the New Year’s holiday, as well.The Sheriff’s Office’s proactive steps are part of a statewide effort – dubbed “The Heat Is On” – aimed to prevent holiday partygoers from driving drunk.”Office parties and gatherings with family and friends are a hallmark of the holiday season, but all too often, drivers take the party on the road and endanger all of us, ” Gov. Bill Owens said in a press release.The Colorado State Patrol and 51 police and sheriff’s departments from all over the state will add extra personnel this weekend.Last December, 17 people died on Colorado highways in crashes involving intoxicated drivers, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.In 2005, Summit County police and sheriff’s departments will receive $45,000 to help keep roads safer.The money comes from a $1.8 million grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Fund, which is comprised of fees collected from convicted intoxicated drivers.
