SHS golfers take fifth at league meet

ARVADA – Four league meets into the fall season, one thing has become clear to the Summit High School golf team: It’s a tough year to play in the 4A Jeffco League. In a league meet, Summit High School shot a respectable 321 on Friday at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada, but finished fifth out of 10 teams. Jimmy Keeling converted nine up-and-downs on his way to a 75 to lead the Tigers, placing third overall. Rudi Turrin shot 80, brothers Sean and Brett Miller both scored 83 and Corey Stanton shot 86 for Summit.”All in all the team is doing well this year, but the competition is a little stiffer than last year,” Summit coach Chris Saunders said. “If you finished under 320 last year there was a good chance you’d win the meet.”Keeling said playing against better players is good motivation. But if everyone doesn’t break 80, winning probably isn’t a possibility.”I know we could play better, but we we’re playing respectable,” Keeling said. “We all know we can break 80, we just need to get the team firing together.”Keeling’s 75 was his lowest score of the season. “My driving was good and my approach shots were pretty horrible, but I was able to get up and down all day,” Keeling said. “My chipping was amazing.”The Tigers travel back to Arvada on Tuesday for a league meet at Westwoods. They have only one more Jeffco contest after that, Sept. 15, at the Meadows.Andy Frame can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 236, or at aframe@summitdaily.com.
