Sierra Club to discuss drilling at Feb. 7 meeting

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

The Blue River Group of the Sierra Club will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 7, in the Mount Royal Room of the County Commons to discuss citizen efforts to balance the gas drilling on the Roan Plateau with resource protection of the area for ranchers, water and future generations.Regional Sierra Club staff member Adriana Raudzens will present a program on the Roan Plateau. Looming 3,500 feet above Rifle, the Roan Plateau is a place of scenic beauty and solitude amidst an industrial desert of oil and gas drilling, she said. This popular destination spot for local hunters, fishers, wildlife viewer and hikers is one of Western Colorado’s four most biologically diverse places. The Roan Plateau is home to some of the purest strains of the imperiled Colorado cutthroat trout, and its sage-covered top provides critical habitat for the declining sage grouse. The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) draft management plan for the area allows extensive drilling of the Roan Plateau’s base and top.In response, the conservation community and friends have proposed a Community Alternative to the BLM’s plan. The Community Alternative keeps drilling off the Roan Plateau’s top and, instead, encourages technologies such as directional drilling to access more than 75 percent of the natural gas that lies under the plateau. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Karn Stiegelmeier (970) 468-9013 or bluerivergroup@aol.com.
