SUMMIT COUNTY – Advocates for a smoke-free county are distributing sign-up sheets to businesses to collect signatures of those who support their cause.

A group calling itself Smoke-Free Summit formed last month. Members hope to garner enough support to put an initiative on the ballot to do away with smoking in public places, including restaurants and bars.

The issue has pitted people against one another. Some smokers say they don’t mind having to go outside to light up. Some non-smokers say bar owners should be the ones making the decision. Smoke-Free Summit is fighting on behalf of employees who work in bars and restaurants where smoking is prevalent.

Members plan to present the completed forms to local elected officials to show them how many citizens want the county to go smoke-free. So far they have collected 10 to 15 forms, each bearing 13 signatures.
