Silverthorne eyes tweaks to parking code

Silverthorne Town Council members are considering holding registered owners of motor vehicles responsible if their vehicle is parked on town streets or rights of way.

They consider the first of two readings of the revised ordinance today at 6 p.m. during their regular meeting at Town Hall.

The revision is aimed to close the loophole where vehicle owners may not be fined, and their vehicle may not be towed or impounded, if they’re not seen parking the vehicle.

It allows town officials to hold both the owner and the driver jointly responsible and liable for any violations of the parking code.

“The municipal court judge has indicated a reluctance to fine a violation of the no-parking requirement where the registered owner is not actually seen parking the vehicle,” town documents state. “The ordinance corrects this problem.”

Parking is currently prohibited at all times on town streets and rights of way, with town-owned vehicles exempt if they’re performing maintenance. Fire, ambulance and police vehicles are also exempt if they’re responding to calls or enforcing the law.

Also at the meeting, town council members plan to enter executive session to receive legal advice and instruct negotiations regarding the Blue River Trail lawsuit. They’ll also seek council for the potential settlement among various West Slope interests and the Denver Water Department concerning water diversion and supply issues.
