– Color ” the ideal is the absence of all color. Although diamonds range from colorless to almost every hue, most have light yellow tints. Fancy color diamonds ” in hues other than yellow ” may equal or surpass the value of a colorless one.

– Cut ” the cut determines the beauty of the diamond. Round, brilliant cut diamonds are known as Ideal American cuts, which allow light to enter and exit the stone creating the most brilliance.

– Clarity ” based on examination by a trained gemologist using specialized tools, determines numbers of blemishes and inclusions. Blemishes are flaws on the surface and inclusions are flaws within the stone. The best stones are flawless ” with no imperfections ” the worst are imperfect with flaws visible to the eye.

– Carat weight ” measured in points, 100 points equal one carat, which weighs 200 milligrams.
