Skateboarding has no place on Breck streets

Alan Weintraub
Breckenridge

I am shocked that the the Breckenridge Town Council would approve skateboarding on city streets.

Apparently, Mayor Warner is the only member with any common sense.

Having witnessed two near-collisions at Lincoln and Main in the last two weeks, I am sure this is an accident waiting to happen.

In both instances, the riders were unable to stop and went right through the intersection, causing cars to stop to avoid hitting them and nearly creating serious injury to drivers.

Has everyone forgotten that skateboards have NO brakes?

Is the town going to put up signs warning tourists and drivers to “Beware of Skateboarders?”

In addition, has anyone considered the liability the town will have when skateboarders or tourists are injured?

Jay Dale is dreaming if he thinks there won’t be “hassles” and that kids will use proper etiquette.

Perhaps he can hold classes at his ride shop.

This has nothing to do with being green but with a group of council members passing “feel good” legislation to satisfy a very small minority of the town.

Let the kids take the Free Ride and keep our streets safe for residents and tourists.

If this is indeed transportation, then the town should require all skateboarders to have a license and proof of liability insurance, just as automobile drivers do.

I am hoping that concerned citizens will join me Sept. 9 to voice our disapproval at the council meeting.
