Ski resorts ramping up for winter

SUMMITCOUNTY New terrain, new lifts and new lodges will greet skiers and snowboarders across the state, as resorts have pumped tens of millions of dollars into improvements over the summer.Among the highlights: Arapahoe Basin has pumped $1.2 million into improvements, including 300 additional parking spaces connected to the resort via a pedestrian tunnel under U.S. 6 and a new south-facing sun deck made of recycled materials at the Black Mountain Lodge. The resort also has expanded its snowmaking system onto the beginner Sundance trail. Breckenridge Ski Area will open the Peak 7 base area, the resorts first new base since Peak 9 was established in 1971, featuring the Crystal Peak Lodge and Sevens restaurant in the Grand Lodge. Additionally, the resort is installing new snowmaking on the intermediate Peak 7 trails to ensure good skiing by Christmas. Copper Mountain will open the multi-million dollar Camp Woodward training facility, which will use innovative instructional tools such as trampolines, foam pits, resi-pits and bungee systems, all of which will allow athletes to push their limits safely. Keystone Resort is replacing the River Run gondola with a state-of-the-art eight-passenger gondola with a new loading area in the River Run village. The gondola will rise 2,307 feet in less than 12 minutes and carry about 2,400 people per hour, more than twice the current level. Daily News staff report
