Ski swap season gets under way

BRECKENRIDGE – Winter sports enthusiasts who missed the check-in deadline for this weekend’s annual Team Summit ski swap at the Riverwalk Center can bring their sports gear to the Great Adventure Sports Citizen Swap, scheduled for Thursday.

Individuals are invited to bring skis, snowboards, clothing, boots, poles, packs, accessories and other winter gear to the store at 400 N. Park Ave., in Breckenridge today and Thursday. Shopping begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, with all proceeds benefiting the U.S. Disabled Ski Team.

There is no admission fee, and those 21 years old and older can drink free beer while browsing.

Items that don’t sell will be offered first to the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, then the county Social Services department, Donate-a-Ski and finally, to recycling.

Nordic ski swaps won’t begin until mid-November, but the folks at Great Adventure have agreed to help that effort by accepting gear now and selling it through eBay, an on-line auction site.

Great Adventure Sports will not charge for the service, but the regular Nordic Swap commission of 20 percent will apply. All proceeds benefit local junior Nordic programs and support skiers in Summit County.

Great Adventure also will host its Brecktobercross cyclo-cross race Sept. 20. It is a bike race open to riders of various age categories and held on mixed terrain near the Breckenridge Nordic Center on Peak 8.

Bicyclists can register online or on race day. Cost is $20; juniors 17 and under race free. Call Great Adventure at (970) 453-0333 for more information.
