Skier dies after collision with a tree at Breck

BRECKENRIDGE ” An 18-year-old North Carolina skier died at Breckenridge Medical Center today after he collided with a tree on an intermediate trail at Breckenridge Ski Resort, according to Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.

Richardson has identified the man as 18-year-old Logan Bastedo from Charlotte, N.C.

The accident happened on the Dukes trail on Peak 8. Richardson said witnesses reported that the man was skiing very fast before the collision. He was not wearing a helmet.

The call came into Breckenridge Ski Patrol at approximately 10:10 a.m. and ski patrol responded immediately. Patrollers provided basic life support and transported the patient to the Breckenridge Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The teen had arrived to the county Monday night with a church group. Tuesday was the group’s first day of skiing. Richardson said the victim may have taken a lesson, but that he was an inexperienced skier.

The victim died from massive internal injuries, Richardson said.
