Skier dies after crash at Breckenridge Ski Resort
A 21-year-old skier passed away at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center on Sunday, succumbing to injuries suffered while at Breckenridge Ski Resort earlier that day. The individual has been identified as Daniel Giger, a University of Colorado Boulder student and native of Newport Beach, Calif. who was at the resort for the day with friends, according to Summit County Coroner Regan Wood.
Breckenridge Ski Resort confirmed the death on Monday, offering condolences to those close to Giger.
“On behalf of Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Patrol and Vail Resorts, we send our condolences and support to our guest’s family and friends,” said John Buhler, the resort’s vice president and chief operating officer, in a written statement.
According to a release from Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Giger collided with a tree sometime before 4 p.m. He was transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco after Breckenridge Ski Patrol responded to the incident on an intermediate trail on Peak 7. After further emergency care and evaluation, Giger was pronounced deceased while at the hospital.
Regan noted that this was the first skier death in Summit County this season. However, there have been at least two others in the state. Bindu Pomeroy, 44, was killed snowboarding in the Vail backcountry late last month after landing head first while jumping off a cliff. Bill Brockmueller, 26, passed away at Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital on Dec. 10, six days after colliding with a tree at Eldora Mountain Resort.
