A skier from Castle Rock who collapsed on the Breckenridge Ski Resort on the morning of Feb. 27 died Thursday night at St. Anthony’s Central in Denver.

Michael McPhee, 53, told friends he was not feeling well on Feb. 27, but wanted to continue to ski. He was found on Briar Rose, an intermediate run, just before 10:30 a.m. in cardiac arrest, according to a statement from Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson. No one saw the collapse and it is unclear whether there was trauma involved.

Upon further review of his chart Richardson discovered that he had a bad heart. His brain was without oxygen for an unknown period of time and he never regained consciousness.
