Skier hits tree, dies

BRECKENRIDGE ” A skier from Monument died Wednesday after hitting a tree on Peak 8 at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Air Force Major Stephan K. Kajah, 43, was visiting the resort with friends from the Colorado Springs area when he apparently made a turn too wide, Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said in a statement. He was skiing on the Saw Mill run, an intermediate trail.

He was not wearing a helmet but it was unclear whether that would have made a difference. Richardson said the preliminary cause of death appeared to be massive internal trauma.

In a statement, the resort said the accident happened about 11:45 a.m.

Kajah was a reservist in the Air Force and flew for a commercial freight service, according to the coroner’s report.
